All Around This World map of South America featuring Chile for kids

This week in music class we go south south south with an exploration of Chile for kids. Chile is a 4000 mile long, 100 mile wide strip of stunningly beautiful land that runs like a ribbon along half of South America’s western/Pacific coast.  To meet it in class we sing, we dance, we sing some more . . .

OVERVIEW: “In the mid-1500s when Spanish conquistadors ‘discovered’ Chile they also discovered tens of thousands other people who already lived there . . .”

MUSIC: “Chile’s traditional music is a mix of Andean melodies, Spanish tones and the rhythms and inflections of Africans the Spanish conquistadors brought with them as slaves . . .”

LANGUAGE: “While most Chileans speak Spanish — ‘Chilean Spanish’ to be exact, full of “Chileanisms” — several hundred thousand Chileans of Mapuche origin, mainly from the Central Valley, still speak other languages, like Mapudungun . . .”

IMAGES: “After even a quick glance at the Flickr.com Chile slideshow how could you not dream of visiting a land with such stunning natural beauty . . . ”

THE CUECA: “The ‘national dance’ of Chile is the cueca, an exuberant mix of Native American, African and Spanish influences, in which two dancers simulate the courtship of a rooster and chicken . . .”
