Guarania is a slow, melancholy genre of music created in the 1920s by Paraguayan composer José Asunción Flores in order to demonstrate and spread pride in his country: “[The music] is from my people,” said Flores, “written for and by my people.” “The Rise of the Guarania: A Musical Style That is Paraguay’s Own“–which starts its article by describing Paraguay as “tiny buy charming”–describes the genre as “a cultural emblem of its nation’s pride, collective memory and Guarani-Spanish identity.”
