Since independence from the USSR Kyrgyzstan has become officially bilingual, choosing to keep Russian as a national language alongside Kyrgyz, partially as an attempt to prevent “brain drain.” Kyrgyzstan also kept the Cyrillic script that the Soviets brought with them which had replaced the original Arabic.
