Kosovo

Of all the Flickr slideshows we’ve seen from the lands of the former Yugoslavia, the one from Kosovo most immediately reminds us of the region’s recent political troubles. With the status of Kosovo’s independence from Serbia is still actively in dispute–the nation’s donimant ethnic Albanian population is in strong support, but ruling Serbia still strong opposes– mages of U.N. troops intersperse photos of the nation’s cities, villages and people. Wikitravel’s Kosovo page notes that Kosovo is mainly a land of Albanian Muslims, though Serb, Romani, Ashkalian, Bosniak and Turkish cultures are also on display.Â

Kosovo‘s Roma community has infused a mixture of Albanian, Macedonian and Serbian rhythms with a sort-of Balkan rap in a genre called “tallava” (which can, but does not necessarily have to, involve roller-skating babies.)
