Ud Re Mora

COUNTRY: India
LANGUAGE: Konkani

A peaceful song from Goa in India. Our version elicits the fine feeling of waking up before dawn on the farm.

The title of the original song means “Fly away dear peacock.” The original is an Ouvya (Ovya) song that women may sing as they work grinding spices nanually using stone grinders.

From Les Chants des Enfants du monde Vol. 2: South India, cildren’s songs from Southern Indian collected by French-Canadian ethnomusicologist Francis Corpataux.

Lyrics of All Around This World version:

Ud re mora, ud re moora beemban karav
beemban sandonomor keh loh karav
I wake up in the morning and look for the hens,
The peacock at home says Ill find them again.

The original lyrics (two different translations):

Fly away dear peacock,

fly back to your group,

two of your friends (peacocks) have already gone back.

OR,

Wake up the peacock and watch the chickens.

The hens are lost. The peacock returned home.

Where did you go last night?
