If you love camels — and you DO — you must make a pilgrimage to the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, which draws 30,000 camels (and their human friends) to the ad-Dahna Desert for a month of camel adoration. The most notorious event is the “camel beauty contest,” in which the prettiest camels compete for over $30 million in prizes. (How do you judge the most beautiful camel?) There are also camel races, thrilling events that feature camels ridden by robotic jockeys tearing through the desert followed closely by their handlers beside them, driving, often frantically, in white Land Rovers.
