Location

All Around This World classes take place in Jay's West Philadelphia living room. Contact Jay for the exact address.

Some details:

  • STROLLERS
Strollers can go on the front porch or can come inside as long as you fold them up. You may also put them in the bike hutch in the back of the alley. (You'll see it.)
  • PARKING
There is on-street parking available -- some limited to two hours, some unlimited. Check the sign if you plan to stay parked for a while. Leave a few minutes to park just in case there's not a spot available right in front of the house.
  • SEPTA
Jay's house is easily accessible via Septa. Take the 34 green line trolley that goes up Baltimore, the 42 Bus that goes up Spruce or the 21 bus that goes up Walnut.
  • WHEELCHAIRS
Like most West Philly houses, Jay's has stairs leading up to the front porch. There is some possibilty for wheelchair acessibility. Contact Jay for details.
  • ALLERGIES?
The Sand family dog is going to be elsewhere during class times, but you should know that Jay's family does have a dog. Ned, the dog, is a Bouvier des Flandres and is technically hypoallergenic (she doesn't shed), but very sensitive people may be allergic. Jay's kids don't have any food allergies that he's aware of so there have been peanuts and other things in the kitchen. Let Jay know if you have any specific concerns.
  • COOOOOOOL
The class space will be air conditioned on toasty days.
  • THE PARK!
Want something to do before or after class? If the weather is nice, Clark Park is the place to be. The park covers nine acres and its boundaries are Baltimore Avenue, Woodland Avenue, 43rd Street and 45th Street. There is a playground for small kids at 43rd and Chester and one for slightly bigger kids at 43rd and Regent.
  • PLACES TO MEET AND EAT
If you want to meet someone before or after class there are a few nice, generally kid-friendly coffee places within easy walking distance. Try the Green Line at 43rd and Baltimore, the other Green Line at 45 and Locust, Cafe Clavé on Locust between 43rd and 44th, the Earth Cup (formerly Sam's -- with primarily outdoor seating) on 45th between Osage and Pine, or Kaffa Crossing on Chestnut between 44th and 45th. Kaffa has great Ethiopian food too. Speaking of Ethiopian, Abyssinia at 45th and Locust is a great place to go with kids, especially during the day when it's relatively empty. (Try the ful beans. Yum.) For non-Ethiopian, try Milk & Honey at 45th and Baltimore -- they specialize in fresh and local sandwiches, breads, cheeses and other good food. Local 44 at the corner of 44th and Spruce is a good, child-friendly "gastro-pub." Tampopo on 44th near Spruce offers quick Japanese food and seems to not mind children. Colonial Pizza at the corner of 43rd and Pine has really good pizza and the folks there are always nice to Jay and his kids. Cafe Saigon at 43rd and Spruce is a friendly Vietnamese place with good Pho. There are a lot of great African and other places to eat on Baltimore Avenue; ask Jay for recommendations.
