“Bena Ame” — Everyone Walked Backward

Throughout our “Everything is a Drum” season we sing “Bena Ame,” a song that originated in the polyrhythmic tradition of the West African Ewe. The Ewe oral tradition tells of a despotic king, Agɔ Akɔli or (Agor Akorli) from the 17th century who ruled so brutally that the people literally fled, walking backward as they left and leaving a clear trail behind so they could show their friends and family the route to safety.  In class we honor this history by walking, dancing, flying and jumping backward.
