I know I’m supposed to love all my children equally and not choose favorites, but I have an admission to make: my favorite genre of music in the whole entire world is the Nigerian-originated Afrobeat. I could go on and on (and on) about Afrobeat’s genius transoceanic fusion of the most electric African rhythms with the funkiest James Brown, the genre’s unabashed power — facing down actual dictators — not to mention the almost super-human bravery of the genre’s originator, Fela Kuti…okay, I’ll stop.
