The website of the Pakistani musical sensation Junoon isn’t shy about celebrating the band’s success — the phrases, “Pakistan’s biggest rock band” and “the U2 of South Asia” flow freely. In Junoon’s case those boasts are actually understatement. Junoon became HUGE throughout the 1990s and continues to excite fans today. Watch this video of the band’s performance of one of the most beloved Pakistani songs, “Lal Mari Pat,” to get a sense of how they take classic Pakistani music and suffuse it with rock. We’ll meet Junoon again in a couple weeks when our online class visits Pakistan.
