Not “Zumba Lariula”


This week in our online class we sing “Zumba Lariula,” a playful, somewhat bawdy song about two young Sicilians, promised to be married, who are navigating their last few months. The song in this video isn’t that one, but it’s still great. Songs from Sicily: “I Mizzica Mizzica – ciuri ciuri internazionale folk sicilian music taormina.” I love this guy!

All Around This World summer tour 2019 in Piana Crixia, Italy

The All Around This World/Sand Family summer tour continues in high gear. This is a photo of us being introduced before our performance at a truly magical summer festival in Piana Crixia, Italy. Our new dear friend Hengel Tappa is introducing us. He and his partner Sara Pirotto of Teatro Cantiere brought forth a set of performances under the title “Veglia BiFolka,” with the goal, as they told us, of helping to revive the tradition of sharing theater, stories and joyful experiences with community members face to face, not just mediated through a screen. For the night, mission accomplished.

Chips, chips, Da ti du di du

If every country must have its “Frank Sinatra,” a prime candidate from Italy is Paolo Conte, singer, songwriter and captivating performer who blends cool Mediterranean vibes with groovy jazz. All Around This World’s favorite Paolo Conte song is “Via Con Me,” both because of Conte’s great gritty voice and its fantastic lyric: “Chips, chips, Da ti du di du, Ci bum ci bum bum, Da ti du di du, Ci bum ci bum bum, Da ti du di du.” Wikipedia’s entry on Conte describes him as “an Italian singer, pianist, composer, and lawyer notable for his grainy, resonant voice.” Lawyer?
