Playing Kabaddi across a thousand miles

Earlier this week we learned about Kabaddi, a sport that’s extraordinarily popular in South Asia but is less-than-familiar to most of our kids in the West. This week in our online class we’re going to play it, at least in conceptual terms, across the video wires. If I pretend to be the raider and you pretend to be the defenders, we may not be able to do all the fancy tackling real kabaddi players get to do, but at least we’ll be able to learn the basics of the sport. And, the most fun — we can all hold our breath and say, “KABADDI!”

Sepak Takraw — Yay!

In class this week as we learned about Malaysia we really had fun playing a favorite Southeast Asian sport — Sepak takraw. Sepak takraw is functionally a cross between volleyball and hackeysack. The “ball” is a small-ish one, made of rattan (a kind of palm). The three players on each team stand on each side of what looks like a volleyball/badminton net. As in volleyball they must keep the ball from touching the ground on their side. As in hackeysack they may only touch ball with their feet. And, as in any international sport we meet in music class, when we “play sepak takraw” we joyfully let the toddlers bounce a ball and say “yay!” Become a Southeast Asian sport master by learning sepak takraw skills with the fellow in this video.
