In West Africa We Do What Awa Yombei Does

One of the songs we sing in class this week is also one of our favorites of all time — “Awa Yombei,” a jubilant West African “play song” in which kids clap, sing and mimic each other while dancing. Awa Yombei is the name of girl who, in the course of the song, we follow in her marching, jumping and flying around. You can see kids in the Gambia singing the original song in Mandinka in this video.
