This beautiful Filipino love song, “Jocelynang Baliwag,” is a “kundiman,” which is a type of Spanish-inspired melodic love song, usually in 3/4 time. In class we translate it as “Sweetest Darling,” and sing it in part to remind us that Spain was the primary colonial power in the Philippines for almost 400 years, with all the cultural, linguistic and political baggage that brings.
