Making Maqsum DANCE on the Darbuka

Maqsum, which we meet this week in music class, is one of the foundational Arabic rhythms, a set of beats that starts simply enough — with an easy-as-pie “dum tek, tek dum tek” — then, in the hands of an adept drummer, can go every which wonderful way. Watch the fellows in this video and you’ll get a sense of the many places a dude with a darbuka can take a beat. (Want to learn about the darbuka? Visit DarbukaPlanet.com.)
