In class this week we’re going to try the Chilean cueca — the “national dance” of Chile.
In the Chilean cueca a “rooster” courts a “chicken” by swirling a white kerchief and dancing in circles. In the traditional version the man portrays the rooster, the woman the chicken. If you’re dancing it alone in your kitchen, you can be the rooster. No chicken…? There’s no shame in dancing with your dog.

Causing a Commotion in Chile
We start out Chilean adventure with Banda Conmocion….We’re focusing on Chile this week in music class. What do you know about Chile? If you know nothing and are inspired to learn, start here to begin with the basic basic basics. While you’re doing that, inspire yourself to DANCE with this video of Chile’s cumbia/ska/cha-cha-cha juggernaut, Banda Conmoción.

This week our online class for kids takes us to Chile, which obviously means we’re going to dance the Cueca, but which less obviously means we’re going to greet each other in the Mapuche language (Idioma y Cultura Mapuche), Mapundungun. Say “mari mari!” and you’ll get a smile from the 150,000 remaining native speakers. A great way to start the day!
Te Recuerdo Victor Jara
All Chileans remember the legendary Victor Jara….
In 1970’s Chile extremely brave artists protested the military dictatorship using poetry, theater and political folk songs called, Nueva Cancion. In this video, Victor Jara, who did not survive Pinochet’s rule, performs “Te Recuerdo Amanda.”
