I am Yupik

Two days ago we started our exploration of music of the U.S. and Canada with a Yupik rap. Yesterday we sang a Yupik “basketball song.” Today one more Yupik tune — “I am Yup’ik” performed by Byron Nicholai of Toksook Bay. Great.

Yesterday we met the Yupik nation of the far northern U.S. via a Yupik rap. The”Yupik basketball song” in this video may not be a rap, but it sure is engaging. Everyone in the house is having a grand time.

Yupik Rap: “Let’s Teach Them About Respect!”


We’re going to start our week revving up to our season of music from the U.S. and Canada with a trek to the north. The Yupik People, a group of indigenous peopls who mainly live in the northern United States, in Alaska, and in Russia’s Far East.  Let’s begin, as one must, with this video of a Yupik rap.  Here is a translation: “Listen, you will learn. By being lazy you won’t accomplish anything. Now, you won’t always have fun. Think about your future, always help each other out. Behave yourself because we are role models to the younger ones. And because we’re role models, let’s teach them about respect!”
