“O Helele” is a folk song from Timor-Leste, a country formerly known as East Timor. In 1999 Timor-Leste became independent after almost 15 years of intense struggle against an occupying Indonesian army. “O Helele,” a song about the perseverance of the Timorese people, had been one of East Timor’s songs of resistance.
