COUNTRY: India
LANGUAGE: Tamil
“Dhe Dhe” is a song from India’s southern Tamil Nadu state. We sing it as if we are a boisterous band of musicians, jamming and improvising and having a grand time, at the end of every verse exclaiming, exuberantly, as Tamil musicians might, “Dhe Dhe!” The original lyrics focus on a beautiful girl with “coral colored lips” who “wears the best ornaments.” In class we use this to sing about our kids’ clothes, especially if they come adorned with spaceships, unicorns and bunnies.
Computer translation of original version:
Lullaby singing with coral colored lips
Wearing the best ornaments best ornaments
With the pomp wealth filled
With the good and heavy
Spreading the leaves
All Around This World’s version:
Ta la la la la la na (2x) Molly’s has her blue pants, blue pants, blue pants
Molly has her blue pants on,
Molly’s has her blue pants, blue pants, blue pants
Molly has her blue pants on,
DHE DHE!
