Lesson 4: Dominican Republic

This week All Around This World travels to the Dominican Republic, a nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Despite having its own struggles, when the Dominican Republic compares itself to the neighbor on its Western border–which it seems to do often–it is proud of its relative prosperity and stability. As we’ll find when we look at the history of the Dominican Republic, those things have come at a cost.

OVERVIEW: For decades the “Generalissimo” ruled, and defined, the Dominican Republic. Slowly, his harsh regime is receding into the past.

MUSIC: Playful merengue rules the roost, but there is room for bolero, bachata and more.

LANGUAGE: Dominican Spanish puts a twist on more common Spanish by adding words from Arawak, borrowing phrases from English, and doing it all really fast.

MERENGUE: The Dominican Republic’s favorite form of music and dance.
