On one hand, there is a limit to just how much one can do with the blues. There are 12 bars of music, an AAB poetic form, a I IV V chord pattern that repeats and repeats. Your lyrics can be proud, pleading or profound, but when you start singing a blues song you have a pretty good idea of where you’re going and how you’re going to get from here to there and back.
On the other hand, if we consider “the blues” not as a straightjacket of a form but as a means of expressing the realities of life through music, the present and future applications of “the blues” are almost unlimited. As we’ve seen in the information above, as long as we make music that emanates from the depths of the soul, singers, like all people, will struggle, they’ll sing those struggles, and we’ll all say “right on” and get in the groove.
