There are essentially two kinds of Tibetan traditional dancing: the CHAM dance, which is religious in nature, typically performed by Buddhist monks, and Tibetan folk dancing, which Tibetans share at community events and festivals. A favorite Tibetan folk dance sub-genre includes SGOR GZHAS (“Sgor” means circle, and “Gzhas” is a kind of dance). Our TINGRI DANCE is a circle dance that is popular in the Tingri region, which is at the foot of the Himalayas, a jumping-off point for Mount Everest. Tibetans in Tingri do dances other than Sgor Gzhas, but the steps we’re learning today will give us a great excuse to circle up.
