Native American/First Nations

This week we start at the very beginning, with the ancient, honorable and often inspirational music of those who inhabited this continent for thousands of years before the late 15th century when some seafaring Europeans took a wrong turn on the way to the Indies, stumbled onto this land and decided they may as well stay. Whatever one calls the peoples who have long inhabited these lands–in the U.S. we now use the term “Native Americans,” and in Canada “First Nations”–we’re still a long way from not only truly appreciating the sacrifices they made over the last five hundred years, but from understanding the full extent of their contribution to North American contemporary visual art, dance, and, most relevant to our purposes, music.
