Jane and Louisa

COUNTRY: Jamaica

LANGUAGE: English

“Jane and Louisa” is a traditional children’s song and ring dance from Jamaica. According to Olive Lewin’s collection of Jamaican folk songs, “Brown gal in de Ring,” the dance has three phases. First, “the children form a ring with two girls on the outside (Jane & Louisa). During the first verse Jane & Louisa approach, walking slowly in time to the music. In the second verse Jane and Louisa each go in a different direction around the circle pretending to pluck a rose from each child. In the third verse each chooses a partner and waltzes in the ring. The partners then become Jane & Louisa and the song begins again.”

Lyrics of All Around This World version:

Jane and Louisa will soon come home,
Soon come home,
Soon come home,
Jane and Louisa will soon come home,
into this beautiful garden.
