COUNTRY: Iraq
LANGUAGE: Kurdish
Found on the the Smithsonian Folkways album, “Kurdish Folk Songs and Dances,” the original starts with the line, “Oh, my eye, my love, I want you to be for me alone.” The liner notes say, “‘my eye’ [is] a Muslim work term of endearment for ‘loved one,’ or ‘apple of my eye.'” The All Around This World version of this song starts with an ululation, which actually appears a couple minutes into the original: “Lu lu lu lu lu lu lu lu lu lu lu lu!!”
