COUNTRY: Turkey
LANGUAGE: Kurdish
A protest song by Turkish/Kurdish pop star Aynur, who is controversial in Turkey because she sometimes sings in her native Kurdish language. The song comments on the Turkish government’s plan to build a dam that will flood a Kurdish village. According to a Kurdish blogger who helped All Around This World with Kurdish translations, “‘Eman’ is like a sigh or groan, or ‘Ooooohhhhh’ or ‘oh my!’ It can also be translated as ‘for Heaven’s sake.'”

Şeva tarî şeva tarî eman eman, seva tarî şeva tarî eman eman
The night is dark but I am here, the night is dark but I am here
Eman eman eman eman

Şeva tarî şeva tarî eman eman, seva tarî şeva tarî eman eman
I am a bird high in the air, above a town that won’t be there
Eman eman eman eman
