Axé is a Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian blend of many genres such as reggae, calypso, frevo and forro. Popular in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. “The Story of Axé Music in Brazil,” explains how activist musicians from the ’70s fused African rhythms with many Latin and Caribbean styles. “A Short History of Axé” asserts that the genre first appeared when “a Salvador jingle factory threw together a spicy version of Simon and Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson,” which followed a new yet simple recipe: “add jazz-like solos to Afro-Brazilian percussion and lay over a simple melody.”
