Turkey — Trabzon Dance

Trabzon is a town located on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Many traditional dances originated in and around the town, including the dance we introduce in class and call the Trabzon. As the Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble explains, “the [Trabzon] dance symbolizes the wild waves of the Black Sea and the flashing and fluttering of the prized ‘hamsi’ (anchovy) fish after it has been caught by fishermen–fast shoulder shimmy and trembling of the entire body.” Dancers stand in a line or collect in a circle, often clasping fingers and moving together.
