The atabaque is a tall Brazilian instrument, an Afro-Brazilian hand drum that uses a set of ropes intertwined around the body that is connected to the head by tuning mechanism consisting of a metal ring and wedges of wood, allowing the drummer to tune it. Atabaques feature prominently in Afro-Brazilian religious music and in the spiritual music that supports capoeira.
