South Africa-boosting tourist websites like SouthAfrica.net proudly boast photos of the nation’s natural, linguistic and ethnic diversity. Flickr.com’s “South Africa” slideshow features the nation’s many animal species and diverse natural landscapes. The “Rainbow Nation” photo array on SouthAfrica.info presents faces from the nation’s many enthnic groups, inferring an ethnically harmonious society. All of this diversity is present, but there are many more layers to South Africa. For example, if you actually want to see some images of township life, put the terms “South Africa Soweto” into Flickr’s search engine. You’ll see no safari animals, no sandy beaches, just South Africans who are making due day to day, living the best they can.

As always, look through these slideshows once before sharing them with the kids.
