LonelyPlanet.com’s pages about the Baltics (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) describe the three nations in glowing terms. While Latvia, “is poised to become the continent’s next A-list star” and Lithuania is, “Europe’s best-kept secret,” Estonia “is no longer Europe’s best-kept secret.” (Hurrah for Estonia!) No matter how different they may be in language, history and culture, the three countries apparently share a welcoming, easygoing approach to travelers, enough tourist infrastructure to make a visit comfortable, and more than ample history (Talinn, Estonia), rugged nature (Curonian Spit, Lithuania), not so rugged nature (Jūrmala, Latvia) and nightlife (Riga, Latvia) to keep any traveler happy.
