Micronesia (Lessons 6-7)

in class we take our music class to a group of small islands plunked down in the Pacific. We say, “small islands” not only because most of them are small but because that’s also their common designation–Micronesia, meaning “small islands” (from Greek), is a group of about 2,000 tropical gems strewn about three million or so square miles of the Pacific. These equatorial islands are the result of volcanic activity a few million years back; some are tips of submerged mountains or atolls that are the rims of volcanoes, leaving an island that is a circle of white sandy beach surrounding a crystal blue lagoon. Sounds beautiful, eh?, so why wait? Let’s go there.
